Margarete, ​Tirol úrnője, a XIV. században élt, amikor a várak hatalma csökken, a városok szorgalmas polgárainak kezében hatékonyabb fegyver csörög – a pénz. A Római Birodalom örökéért folytatott vetélkedésben Tirol hegyekkel körülzárt, gazdag földje fontos szerepet játszik: a Luxemburg, Wittelsbach és Habsburg család küzd egymással birtoklásáért. A csúnya hercegnő a vetélkedések, küzdelmek közepette, a városok fejlődéséért harcol. Szeretetre, emberi közösségre vágyik, de sem alattvalói ragaszkodását, sem az egyéni boldogságot nem találja meg, förtelmes külleme mindenkit elriaszt. Mindkét házassága boldogtalan, gonosz embert választ szeretőjének. Kezéhez vér tapad, kínzó bűntudat gyötri és még a gyűlölt vetélytárs, Ágnes, megölése sem hoz vigaszt összetört, meghasonlott szívének, mert mindig a szépséges, bájos asszony marad a győztes, még halálában is. A tűzvész és pestis sújtotta ország Habsburg kézre jut és az öregedő, csúnya asszony, élete roncsai felett, már csak a mértéktelen evésben talál gyönyörűséget.
