Hazánkat nem szokás a hegyvidéki országok közé sorolni, a külföldi turistát mindenekelőtt a végtelen síkság, a délibábos róna képzete vonzza hozzánk. A dunántúli dombok, az északi Balaton-környéki magaslatok sem számítanak hegyeknek. Szépségükhöz képest azonban korántsem ismerjük és tartjuk számon Észak-Magyarország "igazi" középhegységi tájait.
A Dunakanyartól északkelet felé az országhatárig húzódik a Kárpátok déli pereméhez tartozó hegyvidék. A Mátra ezer méter fölé magasodó hegyei, a Bükk erdőborította fennsíkja, a barlangoktól szabdalt Aggteleki-karsztvidék megannyi érdekes, szemet gyönyörködtető idegenforgalmi látványosság. Ráadásul merőben eltérnek a külföldi vendégnek hazánkról alkotott sablonos elképzelésétől -, de kellemes meglepetéseket tartogatnak nekünk magyaroknak is. Középkori történelmünk valóságos, látható emlékei: a román és a későbbi gótikus stílusú templomocskák és a hegycsúcsokon mélázó várromok a múltat egy pillanatra szinte a jelenbe emelik számunkra. Letűnt századok kapnak röpke életet: török martalócokat, Rákóczi kurucait, a szabadságharc honvédeit véljük a szirtek, ősi fák között elsuhanni.
