Miről szól a családszociológia? Annyi természetesen bizonyos, hogy a családokról. És itt tüstént ketté is ágazik a kérdés. Az egyik ága az, hogy meg kell pontosabban mondani, hogy itt, ebben a jegyzetben mit is értünk a család fogalmán? (Mert hogy ez nem is olyan egyértelmű: tegyünk egy kísérletet, és kérdezzünk meg tíz embert, szerintük „mi a család?”; biztos, hogy tízen tízfélét fognak mondani.) A másik ága meg az, hogy mi az a sajátosság, amit éppen a családszociológia tesz hozzá a dologhoz, mivel a családról beszél a pszichológia is, a néprajz is, a jogtudomány is, a közgazdaságtan is …
Az első kérdéssel – mi a család fogalma – a következő pontban nézünk szembe; számunkra való kitüntetett fontossága miatt külön pontban kell vele foglalkoznunk. Egyelőre elég annyit leszögezni, hogy a család mindenképpen valamiféle társadalmi alakulat (is), ezért lehet tárgya a szociológiának (is). A szociológia ugyanis társadalomtudomány, mégpedig olyan, amely nem valami társadalmi részjelenséggel foglalkozik (mint például az irodalomtudomány az irodaalommal, a történettudomány a történelemmel stb.), hanem bármivel, ami a társadalomban történik, és mindig azt vizsgálja, hogy a dolog, amit éppen vizsgál, mennyiben és miként társadalmi természetű, hogyan hat rá a társadalom, és ő – a vizsgált dolog – milyen társadalmi hatásokat vált ki, hogyan illeszkedik a társadalmi folyamatok és struktúrák rendszerébe. A szociológia sajátossága tehát nem abban van, hogy mit vizsgál, hanem abban, hogy hogyan, milyen nézőpontból vizsgálja tárgyát. A szociológia (a családszociológia) számára tehát a család mint társadalmi jelenség érdekes…
