Duitsch Krisztián Salamon 1734-ben született Temesváron zsidó családban. Prágában tanult kora egyik legnagyobb és leghíresebb jesivájában (talmudiskola), majd megszerezte a Morénu diplomát (talmudtudósi oklevél).

Fiatal feleségének halála után kétségei támadtak, és válaszok után kezdett kutatni. Útja a megfeszített Messiáshoz vezetett, amit környezete nem tudott elfogadni, így Duitsch rabbinak el kellett hagynia lakóhelyét. Évekig bolyongott Európában, őrizve magában a hitet, zsidóként keresve az utat Jézushoz. Végül Hollandiában vallotta meg hitét és telepedett le, ahol később lelkésszé szentelték.

1839-ben két skót misszionárius érkezett Budapestre. Nem Magyarországra indultak, hosszú és kalandos út után mégis ide jutottak, és egy betegség folytán maradni kényszerültek. Eredeti tervük az volt, hogy felmérik Palesztinában és Európában a zsidóság helyzetét, ezzel segítve a Skót Egyház zsidómissziós törekvéseit. Budapesten Mária Dorottya főhercegnő buzdítására missziós állomást hoztak létre 1841-ben.

Saphir Izrael, a kimagasló műveltségű és tekintélyes zsidó kereskedő és családja közeli barátságba került a skót misszionáriusokkal, ami hamarosan gyökeresen megváltoztatta a család gondolkodását...
