Isaac Bashevis Singer

A kötet 16 novelláját maga a Nobel-díjas szerző válogatta. Magyarul eddig három regénye (A rabszolga, A lublini mágus, A Sátán Gorajban), egy novelláskötete (Hét kicsi suszterinas) jelent meg, s a magyar olvasóközönség körében nagy sikert aratott. Nemrég adtuk ki Szerelem és száműzetés c. önéletrajzát. Novellái valahogy mindig rejtélyesek, párbeszédei, karakterei Dosztojevszkij írásainak mélységét és keménységét idézik fel, iróniája többértelművé teszi műveit.
Sokarcú a kötet, egyik novellájában Lejb kegyetlen, ámde hiábavaló gyilkosságairól olvashatunk, a másik Boccaccio-parafrázis: a falusi tanító elesett szolgája démonnak adja ki magát, hogy rávegye a szeretkezésre Tajbelét, a magányos, elhagyott asszonyt, a lublini zsidó teológussal, Ceidlusszal pedig maga a Sátán folytat disputát hitről és az emberi élet korlátairól és lehetőségeiről.
