A magyar történelem egyik legjelentősebb alakjának életrajzát veszi kezébe az olvasó. Ez a regényes életrajz egy nagy tehetségű ember szellemi kibontakozását és történelemformáló tevékenységét mutatja be. A tiszti pályán katonai babérokra törekvő tizennyolc éves mágnásfiúval ismerkedünk meg 1809 júniusában, a győri szégyennap éjszakáján, és a haza legsúlyosabb gondjait magáénak valló, miattuk szenvedő férfitól búcsúzunk 1860 áprilisában, Döblingben. A szerző méltó emléket állít a nagy magyar hazafinak. Könyvében a leglényegesebbet mutatta meg: Széchenyi emberi és politikai fejlődését, a főúri világból magával hozott szemlélet hullámzásait, a felemelő törekvéseket és lesújtó csalódásokat. A könyv külön értéke, hogy a szerző felhasználta Széchenyi naplójának kevéssé ismert vallomásait. Ezek is hozzájárulnak ahhoz, hogy a maga valóságában álljon az olvasó előtt a katona, a politikus, a társadalmi reformer és végül a döblingi mártír nagyszerű alakja.
