Egyikük, a zsidó származású Harold Abrahams mindent feláldoz azért, hogy egy előítéletek uralta világban megmutassa, nem a származás számít. Versenytársa, a skót evangélikus családból származó Eric Liddell úgy érzi, kötelessége, hogy kamatoztassa azt a tehetséget, amit Istentől kapott. Mindketten nemes célért küzdenek. Mindketten a végsőkig elszántak. Mindketten olimpiai aranyra vágynak. De csak egy álom válhat valóra. Minden brit atléta, legyen angol vagy skót, fusson a társadalomért, Isten dicsőségére vagy csak saját magáért - mint a hobbiból gátfutó Lord Andrew Lindsay -, mind ugyanabban a fehér mezben vannak, mindnek ugyanúgy peregnek a másodpercek. Végül mind a hárman elérik céljukat, de más-más úton.
A Tűzszekerek 1981-ben Oscar-díjat nyert a legjobb film, a legjobb forgatókönyv, a legjobb filmzene (Vangelis) és a legjobb díszlet kategóriájában. W. J. Weatherby regényét magyarul először olvashatja az olvasóközönség.
